About Hopefield Animal Sanctuary
Hopefield Animal Sanctuary is located in Brentwood, Essex, and is currently home to nearly 700 rescued animals. The sanctuary is open to the public from March to December to help raise vital funds for the animals’ care, and to help save even more animals in need.
Located on 53 acres of beautiful countryside, you can take a gentle stroll around the grounds while completing a free sanctuary trail, or simply sit and enjoy some peace amongst nature. You can also visit the wonderful Max’s Café, where you can enjoy delicious plant-based refreshments while the children burn off steam in the adjoining play area.
The sanctuary runs a host of amazing, family-friendly events throughout the year, along with ethical animal experiences, school trips and more.
*The sanctuary’s exotic animals are only on public display 6 days a year, on Exotic Animal Weekends.

The Story of Hopefield Animal Sanctuary
Based in Brentwood, Essex, Hopefield Animal Sanctuary was founded in 1983 by Paula and Ernie Clark. It had been the coldest winter for 20 years, and stories of ponies and cobs being abandoned by their owners on Rainham Marshes were hitting the headlines. Paula, a doctor’s receptionist who was already raising money for other sanctuaries, was at home in tears over the story of these poor horses. When Ernie returned home from work and Paula showed him what was happening, they vowed there and then to take action and help the animals that needed them.
A decision that would change the lives of so many animals forever.
They put a call out for some land to start their own sanctuary. A lady from Pitsea had half an acre to offer, so Paula and Ernie started their dream: Hopefield. They began by taking in horses with the intention to foster — bringing them back to health and then finding them good homes. As the sanctuary grew, Ernie and Paula both gave up their jobs to look after the animals that so badly needed them, moving to a larger site at Langdon Hills for three years before Paula found the piece of land that Hopefield sits on today. Their hard work has been recognised by a number of awards, including MBEs for them both, and has inspired many people to help save hundreds of animals’ lives.
Paula lost her battle with cancer in 2009, and Ernie kept his promise to her to continue their work at Hopefield, which he did until he too passed away from cancer in 2011. Since their passing, their work has been carried on with the same passion under the management of Dave Schlaich (CEO) and Lianne Angliss (General Manager).
Hopefield has continued to rescue horses and farm animals of all kinds, and over the years the range of animals in its care has grown considerably. The sanctuary is now home to many types of animals including small animals, alpacas, reindeer and exotic animals, and has opened a reptile room and taken in exotic mammals including raccoons, tanuki, marmosets and a skunk, as well as birds of prey. The sanctuary’s doors remain open to the public, generating the funds that make Hopefield’s future more secure so it can continue to be a home for life for the animals in its care. Hopefield is a proud member of the Essex community.
